Step into the heart of railway history at Locomotion, the must-visit museum in Shildon that brings Britain’s rail heritage to life.
Home to over 70 historic rail vehicles, including iconic steam engines, powerful diesels, and pioneering electric trains, Locomotion offers an unforgettable experience for families, history enthusiasts, and train lovers alike.
Locomotion Railway Museum in Shildon offers an utterly captivating journey through railway history at the very birthplace of the industry. Set in the world’s first railway town, the museum brings together the largest undercover collection of historic railway vehicles in Europe — nearly 100 locomotives and rolling stock, with 47 of them housed in the recently opened New Hall exhibition space
The £8 million New Hall collection was unveiled in May 2024 as a significant enhancement to the museum. Featuring steam engines, the oldest oil tanker in the world, snowploughs, a tracked Bren Gun Carrier, and cranes – the display is enhanced with oral histories, historic films and graphics that vividly tell the story of Shildon’s pioneering industrial heritage
Visitors stroll along a heritage trail tracing the original 1 km Stockton & Darlington Railway route with signage, interactive stops, and even an Eco Bus link to the Main Hall. There’s a welcoming play area and café nestled near the historic buildings, making it a great family destination
Best of all, admission is completely free (though donations are appreciated), with generous opening hours year‑round. The museum operates as a charity within the Science Museum Group, and it was honoured with the Heritage Railway Association’s 2025 Manisty Award for excellence
Whether you’re a rail enthusiast or looking for a fun and educational day out in County Durham, Locomotion delivers a unique blend of history, innovation, and immersive storytelling.
